Live poultry confirmed to be at least one source of H7N9

A recently completed study of H7N9, the newly identified avian influenza virus that has infected 109 people in China, found it is directly transmitted from live poultry to humans. "The evidence ... suggests it is a pure poultry-to-human transmission and that controlling [infections in people] will therefore depend on controlling the epidemic in poultry," said study leader Kwok-Yung Yuen of the University of Hong Kong. The study identifies poultry as only one source because, according to the World Health Organization, 40% of infected people had no apparent contact with poultry.
