Why leadership on diversity must be integral to educational mission

Leadership on diversity at colleges and universities means making the issue an integral part of the educational mission, Damon A. Williams writes in his new book, "Strategic Diversity Leadership." In this interview, Williams, vice provost and chief diversity officer at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, says leaders must go against the grain to end traditions of exclusion. "[D]iversity work is not something we 'do' in the wake of a diversity crisis, but a sustained, integrated endeavor that is central to an institution's striving for educational and societal relevance," Williams concludes.
