Hospitals trim services, staffing to reduce costs

The latest American Hospital Association survey showed 22% of hospitals responding had reduced services because of the economy. Cutbacks were widespread, from outpatient clinics, behavioral health programs and patient education to home health care after discharge. Less than half of the facilities had reduced staff but the number of hospitals turning to layoffs was on the rise.
