Federal plan to improve the teaching profession is assessed

There is much to like about Project RESPECT, a new federal grant program aimed at improving the teaching profession, Brooklyn, N.Y., social studies and English teacher Stephen Lazar writes in this blog post. The not-yet-public policy includes plans to provide increased compensation for career teachers who serve in various roles in both the classroom and as leaders, which Lazar said is welcome. He expresses concern, however, about new teacher-evaluation systems and their use in determining these roles.
