Chains see global opportunities earlier in the game

Frozen-yogurt chain Pinkberry opened its first store in Moscow this year, a mere six years and 100 units after launching in Los Angeles; the company will operate in 19 countries by year's end and plans to open global and U.S. units in equal numbers this year. The chain and others, including Chipotle, which opened in London a few years ago and has plans for Paris in 2011, are taking their brands international earlier than ever before as the competitive and saturated U.S. market means it's easier to stand out overseas.
