Incoming kindergartners show increased readiness for school in Baltimore city

The Baltimore City school district has seen the school readiness scores of its incoming kindergartners increase by almost 6 percentage points to 77% in 2012, since implementing Common Core State Standards in its pre-K classes. Teachers say the curriculum changes include reading more nonfiction books and informational texts, modeling and explaining vocabulary, asking open-ended questions and having students demonstrate reading comprehension through drawings or acting out ideas.
