AAP releases dietary recommendations for preemies

Premature babies should be given high doses of vitamin D and calcium each day while in the hospital and after discharge, the American Academy of Pediatrics said. In a report published in the journal Pediatrics, the group recommends giving calcium and phosphorus supplements to preterm babies, particularly those with several medical conditions or who weigh less than 3.5 pounds, in order to make their bones stronger and reduce their risk of developing rickets.
