Duncan urged to reject NCLB waivers for Calif. districts

Representatives of eight civil rights groups on Monday sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, asking him to turn down a No Child Left Behind waiver request by a group of nine California school districts including Los Angeles, known as California Office to Reform Education. In the letter, the civil rights groups say that offering the increased flexibility to individual districts -- which would be a first -- could lead to lowered expectations, education reporter Michele McNeil writes in this blog post.
