House Republicans embrace overhaul of U.S. tax code

Republicans in the House of Representatives are scaling back demands for cuts in retirement programs in favor of a push to overhaul the U.S. government's tax laws. Last week, Republican House leaders held meetings with rank-and-file members aimed at convincing them it is sound public policy and good politics to focus on a tax code rewrite when they talk with Democrats about raising the national debt limit.
