Investment gains, increased contributions fatten 529 savings plans

The nation's 529 college-savings plans had a total of $166 billion in assets at the end of 2012, a 25% increase year over year, according to Morningstar. Much of the increase was due to investment gains, but it also represented parents' and grandparents' efforts to step up their contributions as they hear about high student-loan debt.
