Lawmakers in Mich., Minn., Iowa consider nurse staffing bills

Lawmakers in Michigan, Minnesota and Iowa are among those in at least seven states, along with the District of Columbia, that are considering nurse staffing bills this year. Joyce Young, a nursing administrator with St. Joseph Mercy Health System in Michigan, said hospitals are creating their own minimum staff levels and nurses, not lawmakers, are best able to determine staffing needs.
