The Oregon Institute of Technology is helping to fill a gap in demand for nearly 1,000 new graduates a year with its specialty program in optoelectronics. The discipline combines optics and electronics and is applied in a number of high-tech fields, including defense and consumer electronics. "I'm impressed with the program. A lot of people coming out of college are used to digital, but optics is still kind of an analog world that needs specialized training," said Terry Outcalt, general manager at Flir, a company near the campus that specializes in infrared technology.
