Study examines sickle cell disease as factor in priapism

Of the 32,462 men who were taken to U.S. emergency departments between 2006 and 2009 for priapism, 14% had sickle cell disease, and the rate was more than twice as high among patients under 18, according to a report in the Journal of Urology. Rates for the summer months indicate that dehydration may exacerbate the condition among patients with sickle cell disease, an expert said.
