Why standard questions don't provoke honest answers

Albert Lee, who founded high-tech company Xkoto, says some standard hiring-process questions should be scrapped, such as asking references about a candidate's strengths and weaknesses. Lee says it's better to ask, "In what area have you seen the most improvement?" because it doesn't let the reference say the candidate has no weaknesses. "This results in a better conversation. It forces the reference to think," he says.
