Construction volume up in California

California's first-quarter construction activity totaled $16.9 billion, up 6.1% over the first quarter of 2003. Officials at the Construction Industry Research Board, which compiled the numbers, attributed the gain to a strong month of March, especially in private nonresidential building, which hit $1.28 billion that month.
