Palliative care fills gap when patients are not ready for hospice

Palliative care is a growing specialty that fills a gap for seriously ill patients who are not at the end of their life or who are not ready for hospice. Caregiver Denise Alessandro said her elderly mother was not ready for hospice but the family wanted some direction, and their palliative care physicians made small changes that made a big difference. "I think it's a wonderful program. I wish more people knew about it," Alessandro said.
