Top 5 banks release billions from reserves to boost earnings

In the first quarter, the five biggest banks in the U.S. pulled a total of $5 billion from their reserves to increase earnings. Scaling back reserves accounted for about a quarter of their profits for the period, according to an analysis by SNL Financial. Regulators are concerned about the pace at which banks are reducing their reserves.
