RFA: Ethanol, RFS have nothing to do with refinery closures

PBF Energy Chairman Thomas O'Malley misled members of the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee when he blamed ethanol and the Renewable Fuel Standard for the recent closures of refineries in the Northeast U.S., writes Geoff Cooper, vice president of research and analysis for the Renewable Fuels Association. "O'Malley's comments are more reflective of the petroleum industry's crusade against renewable fuels and a willingness to play fast and loose with the facts," Cooper writes. The refineries closed because of overcapacity in the region and their inability to process the types of crude oil that are becoming more abundant in the U.S., Cooper explains.
