Companies try to engineer employee connections

Some companies are becoming more sophisticated in their efforts to encourage serendipitous encounters between employees, with some making their offices more compact and others installing conversation starters such as games and puzzles near elevators and other high-traffic areas. Salesforce.com has a "lunch button" kiosk that schedules employees for lunch meetings, and Zappos plans to install tiny break rooms at its new headquarters and turn its lobby into a co-working space.
