Impaired beta-cell function linked to diabetes risk in Asian Indians

Poor pancreatic beta-cell function may drive development of type 2 diabetes in Asian Indians, according to a study published in Diabetes Care. The findings contradict the theory that insulin resistance is the main driver for the disease and could lead to further investigation into the meaning of normal glycemia and the potential of beta-cell function as a risk indicator for diabetes, said researcher Lisa R. Staimez from Emory University in Atlanta.
