Lawmaker says he'll push for federal funds for La. levee study

Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-La., told residents of Louisiana's St. John the Baptist Parish that he will continue pursuing $650,000 in federal funds for the completion of a study on a proposed levee in the area. The cost of the entire project could reach $1 billion, said Jeffrey Varisco, a project manager with the Army Corps of Engineers. "Our early economic modeling suggests that there is potential for a feasible hurricane-risk-reduction project. That's good news, because all the decisions we make at the federal level are about whether ... the federal government finds there is a favorable return on the investment," Varisco said.
