Measuring IT's economic benefits a challenge for analysts

Since few of technology solutions related to Big Data and the Internet actually make things, their impact on U.S. productivity is hard calculate, economists say. Starting this year, the Commerce Department will issue revised gross domestic product figures that take into account more abstract economic activity such as research and development, but skeptics say these figures still won't reflect the benefits of platforms such as Facebook or Google Maps.
