School designs changing to boost energy efficiency

Changing building code and curriculum requirements are key factors in determining school design, with the focus increasingly on energy efficiency and the safety of those in the building, said William VanDusen, an architect with Allied Design Consultants. That's one reason why precast concrete will be used for a $17 million elementary-school project in Spring Valley, Ill. "We will be state of the art," said superintendent Jim Hermes of the project.
