California utilities get financial boost for smart grid deployment

Two local utilities are set to benefit from separate $1 million grants issued by the California Energy Commission through its Public Interest Energy Research Program. The Sacramento Municipal Utility District and Glendale Water & Power will use the funding to increase investment in smart grid technologies, including the deployment of more than half a million smart meters. Both projects are partly funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
