GE product centers take a cue from startups

Innovation in a big room in which separate departments all gather to work together continuously is the idea behind General Electric's new product development centers. GE hopes to duplicate the less formal, more energetic brainstorming structure of startup companies. "This is the electromechanical version of what you would try to see in a Silicon Valley startup," said Paul Singer, head of engineering for the GE's Plainville, Conn., division.
