Concerns over the range limit of battery-powered cars may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to an X-ray microscope, writes Michael Abrams. The device allowed a more accurate diagnosis of the problem with lithium-sulfur batteries, which can store 5.5 times as much energy as the lithium-ion batteries currently used but wear out after just 50 charges. Now, researchers believe, they know why this happens, and a solution may be near at hand.
