Va. year-round school offers benefits, challenges

Parents and educators at one of Virginia's nine schools that operates on a year-round calendar cite its challenges and benefits, saying the schedule allows more time to help students who are struggling and keeps teachers from feeling burnt out, but it requires additional planning. "They have that opportunity to have that continuation of learning, of studying and being able to be remediated during the year," said Sabrina Beamon, principal at Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts, a charter school in Richmond, Va. "Not necessarily waiting for summer schools and summer programs like that."
