EU ruling favors airlines in lost baggage claims

Europe's highest court ruled today that the 1999 Montreal Convention limits the compensation airlines must pay for lost or damaged baggage. A passenger lawsuit had sought effectively to double the limits by claiming both material and immaterial damage, a claim rejected by the court, which said stricter limits help to establish an "equitable balance of interest" between airlines and passengers.
