Small-business hiring picks up nationwide

Small businesses have finally started to hire again, according to ADP payroll data. Companies with fewer than 50 employees added a net 1,000 jobs in April, according to the payroll processor, which also adjusted March data to reflect a gain for the first time in almost two years. But many business owners like Jim Houser, co-owner of Hawthorne Auto Clinic in Portland, Ore., say they're happy with holding headcount steady.
