Are women leaders penalized for their success?

A body of research indicates that women in positions of power are often judged harshly when they do not conform to feminine stereotypes, writes Marianne Cooper, a sociologist at the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University. The studies indicate that "high-achieving women experience social backlash because their very success -- and specifically the behaviors that created that success -- violates our expectations about how women are supposed to behave," she writes.
