Calif. education center engages young students in math, science

An early-childhood program at the California Institute of Technology is focused on using the scientific method to teach subjects, such as math, to preschool students. An early understanding of math concepts can have long-term benefits for students, according to research by Greg Duncan of the University of California, Irvine. "Kids have amazing intuition for basic math concepts and it's really a matter of providing the vocabulary and support to translate this intuitive knowledge into more concrete math skills that will be the foundation for later math learning," Duncan said.
