Competition challenges first-graders with advanced math

First-graders from all elementary schools in Danville, Ill., will gather Friday for the annual First-Grade Math Challenge, a competition that tasks the young students with word problems, fractions and some algebra -- all material that's beyond the typical first-grade math curriculum. Just as students must show their work on math tests, these competitors will get bonus points if they can explain their answers.
