Forecasting Red River flooding poses a challenge, experts say

Government meteorologists are seeking to improve their flood forecasts for Fargo, N.D., and other areas along the Red River, but still face limitations despite the available data and technological advances, they say. Forecasters are "being asked to do the impossible. ... We don't have a perfect knowledge [of] what's going on today in the system, and yet we're supposed to be able to forecast some unknown point in the future where clearly we have no knowledge," said Greg Gust of the National Weather Service.
