New HIPAA laws raise questions about refill reminders

CVS announced plans to end supplier-sponsored refill reminders out of concern that the notifications might violate new privacy laws against using personal health information for marketing, thereby prompting audits. National Consumers League Executive Director Sally Greenberg said the Obama administration should clarify rules regarding reminders so that adherence programs are not impeded.
