New stent-retrievers offer new options for stroke

Stent-retriever devices are offering new hope to ischemic stroke patients who can't or don't benefit from clot-busting drugs. Some 130,000 Americans die of stroke each year, and doctors say the new devices, which include suctioning and corkscrew functions to trap and remove large clots, perform better than earlier devices. About 5% of patients experience serious complications such as brain or leg hemorrhaging or the rupture of vessels in the brain, experts say.
