Online sales tax legislation would affect digital goods

In addition to letting states tax physical goods, the Marketplace Fairness Act, approved by the Senate, would allow taxation of digital goods, including mobile applications. Opponents of that provision say it would put an undue burden on developers, especially those in the five states that treat digital goods as nontaxable. Under the legislation, they would have to collect and remit sales tax to other states.
