In the face of the pressures imposed by today's digital environment, The Associated Press' new guidelines for social media instruct reporters to think twice before interviewing subjects in sensitive situations and not to spread unverified information. "Staffers should use their journalistic instincts to determine whether inquiring through social media is appropriate at all given the source's difficult circumstances, and should consult with a manager in making this decision," the guidelines say.
