Bill would put VA under states' guidelines for infectious-disease alerts

Hospitals operated by the Veterans Affairs Department would be required to report cases of infectious diseases such as Legionnaires' disease to state health agencies under legislation filed April 29 in the House of Representatives. "Our VA hospitals should be held to the same infectious-disease reporting standards as private hospitals, and this bill will help to ensure that," bill sponsor Rep. Mike Coffman, R-Colo., said in a statement. A Legionnaires' outbreak in 2011 and 2012 in Pittsburgh VA facilities sickened as many as 21 patients, five of whom died.
