Chen: Doctors need to know what patients want to know

Dr. Pauline Chen said she sometimes finds it difficult to know if she has done the right thing by being forthcoming with patients and families about a poor prognosis or terminal illness. Chen, author of "Final Exam: A Surgeon's Reflections on Mortality," says it is important for physicians and patients to talk before a medical crisis occurs about what the patient wants to be told.
