Manufacturers vie for a shot at mobile's 3rd place

Some handset manufacturers are scrambling to produce a viable alternative platform to the leading smartphone operating systems marketed by Apple and Google in hopes of securing a dominant place in the next wave of the mobile revolution. LG Electronics, Huawei and ZTE are looking to Mozilla's Firefox OS as a possible contender, while others are eyeing the Linux-based Ubuntu OS, but analysts remain skeptical. "If Microsoft with almost unlimited resources can't break in, it's going to make someone think twice," said Gartner's Hugues de la Vergne.
