Should math courses be tailored to students' career goals?

Advanced algebra courses may be necessary only for high-school students planning to enter science, technology, engineering or math fields, according to a study by the nonprofit National Center on Education and the Economy and funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The study, released today, finds that students planning to enroll in a community college should instead take more basic courses focused on the type of math they will use in their careers.
