Schools nationwide are adding hours to their calendars, in part, to help restore time taken away from social studies, science, art and music, physical education and other subjects in order to boost instructional time for reading and math. "People are finally facing the fact that the school schedule wasn't set by what we need to do to get the job done," said Chris Gabrieli, chairman of the National Center on Time & Learning, a Boston-based education policy group.
