Why an increase in housing prices is good for small-business owners

Housing prices rose 9.3% in the 12-month period ending in February of this year, which is good news for business owners who use home equity to expand their companies, writes Scott Shane of Case Western Reserve University. Research shows that the percentage of business owners who depend on home equity is pretty much the same as in 2007, but recent economic turmoil has reduced the amount that can be borrowed against this equity, he writes.
