Will changing standards for teacher training affect diversity?

As more states seek to raise the academic bar for incoming teachers, a growing number of educators and experts are questioning whether such policies will lead to less diversity within the profession. M. Christopher Brown, president of Alcorn State University, a historically black institution in Mississippi, is among those who say that minority teacher trainees will meet a higher bar if it is set. "We need the best teachers in the classroom, irrespective of race," Brown said.
