Fla. ethanol requirement gives state a say in price of gasoline

Florida's renewable fuel standard is important to the state, which has no oil production or refineries, writes Douglas Durante, executive director of the Clean Fuels Development Coalition. If not for alternatives such as ethanol, the state would be at the mercy of the oil market when it comes to prices, he writes. "Ethanol is not subsidized and is able to compete with petroleum, but it does need access to the market -- a market controlled by the heavily subsidized oil industry. The state ethanol program provides that access," Durante writes.
