Google: Debian is the engine default, Maps to lose sidebar

Google is making the free Debian operating system the default for the Google Compute Engine, a move to solidify developer support in advance of Google I/O, Alex Williams writes. That event, to be held next week, is expected to draw 6,000 attendees and cater to a virtual audience with live streaming presentations and news via the Google Developers Google+ page, among other channels. In advance of the show, a Google System blog indicates that Google Maps is losing its sidebar, but what the new look and functionality are like will have to wait for the show.
