Local board to regain control, expand role of W.Va. district

The West Virginia Board of Education voted unanimously Wednesday to, after more than 11 years, return control of McDowell County schools to the local school board starting July 1. Officials say the long-struggling district will focus on more than just teaching and learning. Schools will serve as community centers in the rural, impoverished area, with adult literacy, drug rehabilitation programs, basic medical care and other services being offered on campus.
