Medical societies often don't weigh cost as they create guidelines

A study in JAMA Internal Medicine found that 17 of 30 medical societies with 10,000 or more members looked at costs when developing treatment guidelines. Nine of the 17 used a formal system to assess costs. "I think it's encouraging the societies are now starting to include costs into their guidelines," NIH researcher Dr. Jennifer Schwartz said.
