Research aims to uncover genetic mutations linked to thalassemia

Researchers at the University of Pune in India are conducting a mutation analysis of patients with beta thalassemia to identify its primary, secondary and tertiary mutations. The program is aimed toward improving treatment of the disease as well as counseling of people with a genetic predisposition to the disease. The bigger objective is to eventually reduce patients' dependence on blood transfusion by improving treatment. More than 60 patients have participated in the research.
