Scratch-and-sniff cards' odor is mistaken for gas leak in Mont.

Discarded scratch-and-sniff cards with mercaptan odorant were to blame for reports of a suspected natural gas leak Wednesday in Great Falls, Mont., said Energy West General Manager Nick Bohr. Workers threw out several boxes of expired cards, which were used by the company in the past to educate customers. The cards emitted the odor when they were picked up and crushed by sanitation trucks, Bohr said.
